Bits & Pieces
GAVIÑA'S COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Anna Valls, Account Assistant Manager

Gaviña’s recognition in coffee is inevitable, but the connection between Gaviña, sustainability and social responsibility is a lesser seen faucet of the Gaviña family. Gaviña has participated in building schools in Nicaragua and Mexico. Gaviña also sponsors and serves coffee at different fundraisers for cancer, leukemia, diabetes, and prematurely born babies. This is all seen by the walkers and other supporters of the different charities, but what isn’t seen is the dedication and team work Gaviña is committed to when participating in these events. At the 2010 Susan G. Komen: Race for the Cure Gaviña had the second largest team at the Los Angeles event. At the Avon Walk 2009 in Long Beach, co-owner of Gaviña; Leonor Gaviña-Valls walked the full 29.3 miles and raised, more than double her quota. Leonor is a 12 year breast cancer survivor. One charity close to my heart that Gaviña began supporting in a different way is the Ronald McDonald Houses. Local Southern California houses receive coffee donations from Gaviña, but a group of employees has taken upon themselves to organize and cook dinner for the many families that stay in one of the five Southern California Houses. The most recent dinner was held in May where agroup of 12 from Gaviña barbequed for the 6 families that were currently at the house. In true Latin fashion, there was too much food, but was well appreciated. There I met two special people: Priscilla and Ariel. They were both receiving treatment at near by hospitals. These two young women are inspirations for the work that can be done. Helping is easier than one might think, I found it’s as easy as sharing a meal with someone.
